Chicago's Midway International Airport (MDW) is located about 10 miles from downtown Chicago. Every year, more than 18 million travelers pass through Midway, which is served by 12 airlines, including American, Continental, Delta, and Southwest. There are five runways, and the airport uses three concourses, each of which features a number of shops and restaurants. Midway has become known as the nation's premier low-fare airport.
Originally built in 1923 and named Chicago Air Park, Midway was renamed in 1949 after World War II's Battle of Midway. In 1929, Midway was named the busiest airport in the world (a title since overtaken by its sister airport, O'Hare). Over the past few years, Midway has undergone substantial redevelopment and renovations, including a new 941,000-square-foot terminal building, a new seven-level parking garage, and 14 additional gates.
Today's Midway airport is clean, bright, non-smoking, and easily navigated. Midway features a number of ATMs located throughout passenger areas, an interfaith chapel, and wi-fi service. The USO is stationed in Concourse C and offers a number of services to military personnel and their families. The work of local and national artists is on display throughout the airport's passenger areas, as well.
There are no hotels located at Midway Airport. Instead, travelers make use of nearby hotels and located motels located in surrounding suburbs.

From Chicago: take I-55 south to Cicero Avenue. Exit south Cicero Avenue to the airport.
From the north suburbs: take I-294 south to I-55 north to Cicero Avenue. Exit south Cicero Avenue to the airport.
From the south suburbs: take I-294 north to I-55 north to Cicero Avenue. Exit south Cicero Avenue to the airport.
From the west suburbs: take I-88 east to I-294 south to I-55 north to Cicero Avenue. Exit south Cicero Avenue to the airport.

Midway Airport operates out of a single terminal building from which emanate a number of concourses. On the upper (or main) level of the terminal, travelers will find ticket counters, flight and baggage check-in, and security checkpoints. The lower level houses baggage claim, rental car company counters, and bus, taxi, and limo service pick-up areas.
Midway Airport operates on three main concourses: A, B, and C. These concourses stem from the terminal area and are accessible only after passing through security. Each of the concourses has been extensively modeled over the past few years as part of the airport's overall renovation. In the center of these concourses is Midway Boulevard, which features a number of shops and restaurants. Many of the restaurants feature pre-packaged meals you can take on board, per TSA regulations.

Concourse A covers gates A1 through A19. The following airlines are served by Concourse A:

Concourse B
ATA and Southwest operate out of Concourse B (gates B1 through B26).
Concourse C
Concourse C is just a short little stretch to the right of Midway Boulevard. This concourse serves American, Continental, and Continental Express. Gates C1, C2, and C3 are found here.
