Website
Greater Rochester International Airport is approximately four miles southwest of Rochester, New York and a little over ten miles south of Lake Ontario. The airport is one of the largest airports in northern New York state. While the airport opened in the 1920s, it served more military flights than passenger flights at times. Greater Rochester International Airport was purchased by Monroe County in 1948 and improvements turned the airport into a thriving passenger airport.
There are approximately two dozen gates within the main terminal. The two-story terminal is almost V shaped with the gates split fairly evenly between Concourse A and Concourse B. At the present time, the airport handles around three million passengers per year. A newer six-lane security checkpoint ensures that travelers are not held up for long amounts of time.
Smoking is not allowed inside the airport. Smokers must go outside into the parking garages or in specified areas outside of the main terminal. While this may not be convenient, it is the law and those caught smoking in public areas are subject to hefty fines.
Greater Rochester International Airport sees more than 200 flights per day heading to twenty different cities. For those in upstate New York, the airport is both convenient and enjoyable with a good number of restaurants and stores.
Directions
Passengers will find that Greater Rochester International Airport is easily reached from I-390's Exit 18. The I-390 heads south from Lake Ontario and connects with Route 104, I-90 (Exit 46), I-490, and I-590. Exit 18 leads right to Brooks Avenue where passengers can easily follow signs to the airport terminal.
Main Terminal
There is one terminal at Greater Rochester International Airport with roadways passing by both levels of the terminal. The first floor is where arriving passengers retrieve their luggage and arrange transportation to their final destination. Car rental desks are also on the lower level in the back, right corner. Valet parking brings cars right up to the exits from the lower level making it easy for passengers to get into their vehicle and head on their way to their home or final destination.
On the upper level, passengers will find the check-in/ticketing area along the front near the main entrances. There are two wings that form a V shape off the main area of the terminal. The right wing is known as Concourse A and Gates A1 through A11 are located here. Concourse A serves AirTran, JetBlue, and US Airways. The left wing, Concourse B, houses gates B1 through B11. Concourse B serves Air Canada, American Airlines, Continental Airlines, Delta Air Lines, Northwest Airlines, and United Airlines. The security checkpoint is located behind the ticketing area before the long hallway that leads to both concourses.
