A black and white beauty, Chester is a Tudor town built on Roman ruins with fabulous architecture, history and atmosphere to spare. Small enough to get around in on foot, but big enough to lose yourself, Chester is an ancient, intimate, and friendly city that wears its age gracefully. It may not be the place to spend an entire holiday, unless you're very very keen on all things Roman, but Chester's small-town vibe makes it the perfect weekend escape from the more frantic Liverpool or Manchester. Spend a couple of days soaking up the historical atmosphere before heading towards the more bustling cities of the south or north to the land of kilts.
