With nearly 109,000 people, Manchester offers all the comforts and amenities a traveler might be looking for. Originally incorporated as Derryfield in 1751, Manchester later was incorporated as the city of Manchester in 1846, named for Manchester, England, with the goal of copying the canal system used there to enhance shipping on the Merrimack River.
Today Manchester is the location of The University of New Hampshire at Manchester. You can shop at the Mall of New Hampshire or special shops and boutiques on Elm Street, the principal downtown thoroughfare and stay in cozy lodgings after enjoying a terrific meal at one of the city's delightful eateries.
