Sacramento is the capitol of the most populous state in the nation, but this city of a half million people retains a small town feel and friendliness. The tree lined downtown streets bustle during the day and at night bars and cafes are open to the air to take advantage of the balmy summer evenings. Sacramento is one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the US and the plethora of excellent restaurants, lively local music scene and many festivals give the visitor and opportunity to experience the varied cultural influences. Located about an hour and a half from the Napa Valley, San Francisco and Lake Tahoe, Sacramento is an excellent jumping off point for a trip to Northern California.

1. California State Capitol Building, Museum & Capitol Park
Constructed between 1861 and 1874 the California State Capitol building houses the State Legislature and the office of the governor as well as being a popular tourist destination and museum. The Capitol Building is set in the middle of 40-acre Capitol Park, which contains hundreds of specimens of trees, shrubs, flowers from all over California and the rest of the world. The Crocker Art Museum is the oldest public art museum west of the Mississippi. It houses early Californian works from the Settlement and Gold Rush eras, turn of the century Impressionism and Tonalism works as well as a large collection of European Old Masters drawings. The museum also has a rapidly growing Asian Art and Interntaionl Cermaics collection. With a permanent collection of over 14,000 pieces and approximately 20 changing exhibitions each year it is the preeminent museum in Central California. 3. California State Railroad Museum
The California State Railroad museum is one of the largest and most popular Railroad Museums in North America, with 21 fully restored locomotives and cars as well as over 1,000 toy trains. 1. Old Sacramento
Founded in 1932 this four block long downtown neighborhood still has a Gold Rush era feel, complete with boardwalks and cobble streets. During the day, visitors can shop at the numerous stores, examine the more than 50 historic buildings or escape the heat by taking a ride on a riverboat. Once the sun goes down the area boasts some of the best live music in town. Festivals are held throughout the year, two of the best being the Pacific Rim Street Festival and the Sacramento Jazz Jubilee. Check out the Visitors Center at Second and K streets.  « skjul
