This playground of the rich and famous was an independent republic until 1672, when it was reclaimed by King Louis the Fourteenth. In the 1920s, Saint-Tropez began to attract international celebrities from the fashion world, but the resort did not achieve widespread fame until the 1950s, when movie stars began to gather there en masse. Today, it is known for its clear water, luxury yachts and sports cars, and active nightlife. Its promenades and outdoor cafés offer a pleasant ambience for wiling away a sunny afternoon, while more active travelers can partake in water sports such as sailing, windsurfing, kayaking and jet skiing off of "Saint-Tropez" pristine beaches.
