Fordele: Really nice and accommodating staff.
Ulemper: The parking garage they partner with took an inordinate amount of time getting our car when picking up.

Good car, expensive insurance
Fordele: We got an automatic Audi in Italy and the car was great. We paid for full insurance because driving in Italy gets pretty crazy. But the cost of the insurance was high and cost more than renting the car. That was the most unfortunate. Staff were polite and kind

Car had an internal GPS system but could only be activated for 11€/day - too expensive so we used a phone instead.
Line to pick up reservation at termini station was long and very unorganized but the enterprise employee was very nice about it.
Locauto Rental Cat at Fuimicino Airport is GREAT!
Fordele: I accidentally booked a car at an Enterprise in Rome, when I meant to book a car in Fuimicino Airport. The attendant was more than willing to help find my reservation and assign a car to me and my wife for the week. Within 5 minutes, she was off the phone with their Rome location and completed my reservation at the airport. Then, she informed us that we were getting an Audi A1, which to me is much better than the original model I was supposed to get (a Renault Clio or equivalent). We had the car for 6 days, no issues, then returned the car back in its original state. So, overall a great experience!
Ulemper: The only mild complaint I had was that the car had a barely noticeable lingering smell of cigarette smoke.
Ulemper: Waited over 1 hour to get to counter, only one staff member serving. I missed my appt I was renting a car to attend so I left.
Very disappointed.

Fordele: Got a hybrid Yaris w/out asking, and it was brand new and perfectly clean.
Ulemper: Only had a half tank of gas, so had to fill up shortly after pickup.

Excellent service & nice car
Fordele: We got a Renault Clio equipped with GPS. Nice little Diesel car, good fuel economy, spotless interior and exterior. Good service, convenient downtown location around corner from Westin Excelsior hotel. Inexpensive-had to make this reservation at the last minutes because of a change of plan, got better price than original booking!
Ulemper: Had to fight Rome traffic to return on time - allow yourself plenty of time for the return trip.
Not getting Enterprise but a shady local provider
Ulemper: Conveniently for them but not the customer, this location closes early around the time you would want to drop off a car, I think 8PM.. DO NOT trust their after hours drop off. We performed a complete check of the car, took pictures and expected an honest walk thru the next morning by Locauto. Instead, 6 days later, well after we left Rome to defend any claim they billed our credit card $400 for a dent. Impossible to rectify with them. Stay away, don't be fooled by their upfront rates and that you are dealing with a reputable company like Enterprise. Locauto is out to make their money off the back end with their deceitful return practices.

Great rental car deal
Fordele: The price was excellent and the car was very nice (small Ford SUV diesel for economy price). It even had a built-in SATNAV. The staff was extremely helpful, friendly and professional.
Ulemper: Location was difficult to find and not convenient if you're staying in the city. The process in the rental was a little antiquated, requiring a lot of paperwork most companies don't use anymore. Maybe it's an Italian thing.
Prices and options totally inconsistant

Ulemper: Prices for rentals were all over the place. The price Avis quotes on its selection page is well under the final price. Price was the highest of Hertz, Enterprise and all local options

Fordele: We booked a Fiat 500 convertible and ended up with a Toyota Yaris because the convertible was “broken.” No upgrade or apology just a curt word that implied we were lucky to get a car at all. To say nothing of the absolute chaos in the rental office with employees barking at each other.

Fordele: I didn't have to wait when I picked up the car nor when I dropped it off. Avis clerks were helpful and competent, the car confy and new and the price right. It was overall a good deal.

Ulemper: I had 2 reservations and clearly told them I wanted the one that was less expensive . Brought in my confirmation number and printout and clearly told them what I wanted . They told me I was paying in dollars not euros . I was over charged by approximately $280. Very upset

Ulemper: One guy there. He was absolutely struggling. Only three customers, and I was customer #2. It literally took over an hour to get checked out because the system was down.
Hard sell and damaged car

Ulemper: Rented twice here. They always give you the hard sell and put items on your bill without explicit consent. Then they don’t print a contract copy so you have to return to the office to mark additional damage. They basically just do everything they can to make a bit more money or make it hard for you not to be overcharged.
Totally different car
Ulemper: Was supposed to get a Luxury SUV (Q5 or similar) - was offered a renault clio
Great experience, one unexpected charge
Fordele: We had an easy, smooth experience with Avis in Roma Termini. The location is convenient, they have long hours and they spoke enough English for us to clearly understand what we were paying for.
Ulemper: The only disappointment was that they charged us 10€ extra for chains, PER DAY! The chains are required equipment by law in the winter— there should not be a charge for basic equipment requirements. This is equivalent to charging extra for the reflective triangle that’s required by law...this is ridiculous and I will do whatever I can in the future to avoid this charge. You should not take advantage of people this way.

Overbooked!
Fordele: Halfway through a month-long trip through Italy, we noticed the rear bumper apparently had been backed into, and we expected to be charged for the damage. When we returned the car, we showed the damage to the attendant "Dario". He reassured us that the damage occurred prior to our use, as evidenced by a picture on Dario's iPhone. We were so relieved by this young gentleman, Dario.
Ulemper: After arriving in Rome from the US, we went directly to the Budget car agency. Many disgruntled people were waiting around the counter, and we found from talking with them that Budget had overbooked and the car that we had rented and paid for 6 months earlier, was not available. Budget staff were frustrated and dealing with angry customers. After a 4 hour wait, a car was returned and cleaned for us. Then we drove 6 hours to a hotel we had reservations for that night, arriving at 11pm.
Ulemper: They refused to provide the van we had reserved several months earlier, even though some were in the lot right in front of us. They offered a larger van at 2 and 1/2 times the price, gave us two tiny cars full of dents barely adequate for our needs. We lost 4 hours at the Rome pick up arguing for better...4 adults and two small children.
We did not get automatic transmissions and had to learn standard on Italian roads, small narrow hilly village streets.
We will never recommend Budget/Avis to anyone.

Pick up and drop got changed on me
Fordele: Response time from Kayak customer service was good.
Ulemper: Somehow the location for my rental pick up and drop off got changed and I couldn't fix it. Budget never answered the phone and had lousy hours. Who closes at 1:00? In the end I had to cancel and make a new booking. I ended up using a different angency and got a better rate anyway.

Do not rent in Rome from Budget
Ulemper: Do not rent a car at Rome airport from Budget. Collecting the car was the worst car-hire experience I have ever had - and I have been renting cars abroad several times a year for many years. Collecting the car took more than three hours: although I had booked and paid in full for the car in May, we were informed on arrival at Rome airport (Fiumicino) in July that no car was available and that we would have to wait for at least an hour. We had already waited in line for two hours simply to be served as only one assistant was on duty (her manager, Francesca, spent almost the entire time on her mobile phone, and offered no support at all). When we were informed that the car had arrived we were not able to inspect it before signing the paperwork. I was told that any existing damage might be charged to me, as I had my own car-hire insurance (a separate annual policy).
I would urge consumers to avoid renting from Budget. It's a fiasco, and I hope the company will be persuaded to investigate this particular branch and implement some much-needed changes as a matter of urgency.

Ulemper: Check in for the van was a nightmare! It was averaging 2 hours and more for everyone. Avis and Budget shared the same counter and the AVIS counter was staffed better than the Budget counter. With today's technology, why was it necessary to manually enter the car rental information. Couldn't this be done ahead rather than at the counter. VERY inefficient. It cost us valuable vacation experience time.

Ulemper: They were not prepared when we picked up the car and despite arranging an after hours drop off before traveling and again in Rome when picking up the car we discovered there was no place to leave it in Sanremo. So, we had to cancel plans to travel to France yesterday and stay in Sanremo, now Hertz is closed and we still have nowhere to leave the car!
Ulemper: I rented the car for less than 24 hours, picked it up at Firenze, dropped it off at Rome. It was advertised that the price would be 49 euros. That is what I paid when I picked it up. The lady that provided the rental agreement at the counter asked me if I wanted to fill up the gas before dropping it off in Rome or if they can do it for me for a ridiculous amount of money, like 3 times the amount it costs to fill up the gas.I said I would fill it up. She laughed and said OK. I didn't understand what that meant but didn't think much of it. She knew the are in Rome because she explained to me how hard it was to get there, to find the little garage door in between the skinny streets of Rome. When I was ready to drop it off, It took me around 2 hours to find the ONLY gas pump in the whole area and it was broken. THEN, I understand why that lady laughed at my thought of attempting to find a gas station around the area. WHY DIDN'T SHE SAY SOMETHING AND JUST LAUGHED? It was just after midnight, around 12:25 and I had to drop the car off at midnight. There was nobody at the drop off location ( so nobody waiting for the car). At the end my bill was for 134 euros! SO like $180 for less than a day! And today, 4 months later, they attempted to charge my credit card again for an extra $35, for no reason. Stay away from Hertz! You have been warned. oh! And customer service ignored my request to go over charges. They didn't even send me an updated bill until I requested it. Never again Hertz.

Run down vehicles seem to be the norm
Fordele: Helpful staff at pick up and drop off locations.
Ulemper: The first minibus broke down, with the clutch pedal sticking to the floor, after less than 300 km, driven on predominantly motorways. Thus it had to be towed away. We had to find our way back, eight people, 40 km out of Florence. In addition, I had to pick up the "new" minibus, in my own time and on personal expenses at Florence airport.
Both minibuses had over 40000 km on the clock, where seriously dented upon pickup, both had a big crack in the passenger side rearview mirror. The second minibus had the safety belt of one of the passenger seats tied around a hinge with a knot because the catch was broken. Also, this replacement vehicle ran out of ad-blue after 200 km.
Luckily this second minibus behaved well and got us to where we wanted to be.

we confirmed our rental for two 7 passenger vans -Mercedes-BenzV-Class

We were told we had to pick the vans up at Roma Tintoretto. However two days before we were to get the vans, we received emails stating they did not have vans and offered us two small cars for each van even though we only had two drivers. It went from bad to worse when we went to the pick-up location, they only had small cars with manual transmissions. After much discussion, thet finally told us to go to the airport where they had two Ford vans for our use. Our family of ten missed our planned tour, etc. because of this mixed up reservation.
Ulemper: All of the above.
Pretty efficient dropoff
Fordele: Had to return the car at 4:30 am. There was an attendant there to receive the car. He didn’t speak much English but enough to communicate the basics.
Ulemper: If I didn’t read blogs, it might have been hard to find the return place. You have to enter the parking lot (as if you’re going to park the car at the airport), get a ticket, and feed that ticket in order to get into hertz lot. Hertz is on “1st floor”, which in Italy means one floor above ground floor (“0 floor”).
Ulemper: Long line of people ahead of us to pick up the car, so it took over an hour to get it. The cruise control didn't work.

SO like $180 for less than a day! And today, 4 months later, they attempted to charge my credit card again for an extra $35, for no reason. Stay away from Hertz! You have been warned. oh! And customer service ignored my request to go over charges. They didn't even send me an updated bill until I requested it. Never again Hertz.

Run down vehicles seem to be the norm
Fordele: Helpful staff at pick up and drop off locations.
Ulemper: The first minibus broke down, with the clutch pedal sticking to the floor, after less than 300 km, driven on predominantly motorways. Thus it had to be towed away. We had to find our way back, eight people, 40 km out of Florence. In addition, I had to pick up the "new" minibus, in my own time and on personal expenses at Florence airport.
Both minibuses had over 40000 km on the clock, where seriously dented upon pickup, both had a big crack in the passenger side rearview mirror. The second minibus had the safety belt of one of the passenger seats tied around a hinge with a knot because the catch was broken. Also, this replacement vehicle ran out of ad-blue after 200 km.
Luckily this second minibus behaved well and got us to where we wanted to be.

We were told we had to pick the vans up at Roma Tintoretto. However two days before we were to get the vans, we received emails stating they did not have vans and offered us two small cars for each van even though we only had two drivers. It went from bad to worse when we went to the pick-up location, they only had small cars with manual transmissions. After much discussion, thet finally told us to go to the airport where they had two Ford vans for our use. Our family of ten missed our planned tour, etc. because of this mixed up reservation.

Ulemper: Long line of people ahead of us to pick up the car, so it took over an hour to get it. The cruise control didn't work.

Ulemper: Dollar uses Hertz/Thrifty as agents but nowhere is this mentioned. Nowhere did it say at Rome train station the location to do the paper work was different than where there cars are located so went to the wrong location. Asked about if the car was returned a little after the origination time (as we had to walk back to the parking garage delaying the pick up of the car) if this would be and issue and was told that as long as I was close it would be ok. Found out at the garage that I was not given all the paper work so at the pick up garage they generated new paper work. Picked up the car. The car was not clean. Rushed check out process Large dent in passenger side door and significant scratches elsewhere. Was told by the garage staff they were aware of all the damage. Thankfully took pictures and paid for the supplemental insurance (very pricey). Drove the car without incident. The return to Florence was more near chaos. Arrived a half hour after the origination time due trouble getting diesel and was immediately asked about getting in an accident due to the dent in the door and also noted the scratches. Also he noted I was a 1/2 hour late returning the car. I stated that the body damage was there already there when we got the car but the somewhat surly check in person stated the paper work had no mention of the car having any damage what so ever. His attitude slowly changed when he realized the substitute paper work given to me at the garage was essentially blank with nor even the starting milage filled in. We worked out a guesstimate for the starting milage and likely since I had the supplemebtal full coverage and time dated pictures of the damage he said nothing more about body damage. Also nothing further about late arrival. After having significant stressr and feeling like this was all going terrible wrong he said everything was fine and he closed the rental. In the end I am not sure I would use Dollar again too much chaos!

OUr agent just gave up because all the staff could care less for reservations. They are meaningless. We ended up next door to Maggiore 10 minutes we were on our way.

I think there is an office in the train station where you sign the paperwork when picking up, that's what is listed on Google Maps. The drop off is a parking garage just down the road, which happens to be a one way street. Miss it and you have to do a big loop. If there had been a larger sign at the drop off location for Europcar it would have prevented me driving by it. Not really a big deal.
Ended up renting with Alamo ; a mistake
