The staff is very friendly and helpful. The grounds are kept up nicely. The location is good. Far enough from the town, but easy enough to get to town. The pool and bar is on the premises. The views are good and they have an excursion office on site which makes it easy. The reef with use of their free kayaks make it easy to get to the reef and snorkel. It is a good value for the price, The units inside are showing its age and kitchen facilities are sometimes not complete or not working. The beds are somewhat comfortable, but need newer mattresses instead of a memory foam topper. There is no onsite restaurant, but many near by which helps.
The rooms and layout of the villa are gorgeous. THe hotel is fully designed to be barefoot all the time, with paths made of thin sand throughout. The staff is very friendly yet poorly trained. The shuttle system is just short of a trap. There are no scheduled boat rides to town, which is 11 miles away or a 25' boat ride. There are also no organized activities by the hotel should you want to spend the day there. Food is ok, but highly overpriced. This forces you to search for options and either spend $150 per day for private shuttles back and forth to San Pedro, or adapt to passengers checking in or out, which are the only times where someone will give you a ride to town without having to charter you own boat. It's a pity because with little professional input this could be paradise in itself.
My favorite spot in Belize's Ambergris Caye. Charming (think 'bohem-chic') bungalows with original artwork and fancy sheets. Lovely grounds, attentive staff, international vibe and one of the better restaurants outside of downown San Pedro.
My husband and I went to Matachica for our honeymoon and had a better time than we could have dreamed. From the moment we were greeted at the airport til the time we departed we were treated incredibly. The staff was so accommodating and truly seemed to care that we had the best time. The food was unbelievable, drinks were amazing and the amenities were perfect. We did everything from paddle boarding and kayaking to snorkeling through a tour with matachica. If you are debating this resort...DONT. Just go and have the best time!
I was only here for one night, wish I could have stayed longer. Restaurant is one of the best on the island, many people come from other hotels here for dinner. Continental breakfast included was lovely. You can kayak, snorkel, or just chill at the pool. Decoration is a mix from many countries, balinese mixed with Mexican and Guatemalan.
We stayed at Matachica for a week in December 2010 and couldn't have been happier with our choice. The grounds are very nice, you actually feel like you are in the tropics where animals live versus the sterile, overly pesticide laden grounds of many larger resorts. That being said you must bring your own bug spray, but that is a mild inconvenience when you consider all the interesting animals you see. Along the beach is an abundance of wildlife from crab to small barracuda and rays. The snorkeling / diving is fantastic. Then there is the wonderful food at the onsite restaurant, served by the most helpful staff I've run into in a very long time. There is free continental breakfast each morning to start your day off right. In all it made for a very relaxing atmosphere where we didn't have a care in the world. If you are looking for a place to relax this is the place to be.
The grounds and rooms are gorgeous and really well maintained. The landscaping is impeccably maintained and is very colorful. The pool is very pretty and you can borrow a kayak and paddle out to snorkel at the reef by yourself and take as long as you want. The water here is crystalline and warm. The first room we were in was a smaller sea breeze bungalow and was very quiet and relaxing. The only con was that the bed was pretty hard. A few days into our stay, we were given an unexpected complimentary upgrade to a much larger casita by the pool. It was also tastefully decorated and the fans were really nice and very quiet and this bed was much softer and more comfortable. The only drawback to this room was the shower which was a tepid dribble. There was construction going on behind the rooms we were in which was a little noisy, but since we spent most of the day out doing things it really didn't hamper our enjoyment of the resort. The staff at the resort were amazing. They were extreme...
We were hoping for better snorkeling, which disappointed. If you looking for a peaceful get-away, it's perfect. The town, accessible by boat, does not offer much to see or do.
