Location, uniqueness of design, high level of service
helpfull staff Not 4 star standart though have to admitt that having hotel rooms in very old dwellings/caves have limits
all, excellent design, unique location and environment restaurant is not cheap
Breakfast was great Poor service, damp hotel rooms, very rocky walkway slipery walkways slipery showers never again
The staff were very friendly and helpful. n/a
Great feeling of the history of the Sassi in the bedrooms which are part cave structure The room is very separate from the facilities so that you have to leave the bedroom in order to get to the breakfast room which means going outside into the public pathway. Similarly to get to Reception area. Can be noisy as the public are immediately outside your bedroom door.
The room and the view from the hotel were significant and impressive! Room was clean and staffs were friendly. Breakfast at the hotel restaurtant was rich and gorgeous. Nothing.
It was interesting to stay (partially) in a cave. The rooms are built into the cliffs. I liked the balcony of the room. The food itself was not spectacular but, in general, it was good. Some services were lacking but these can be rectified. There was no information sheet (that is easy to do - write on the computer & print). For example, I was not told that there was a bar which had a library and that we would have a welcome drink. In terms of the dining room, they are trying - but sometimes service is slow (cold capucchino, being served the first course - e.g. pasta before choosing your wine). Again, these problems can easily be rectified. They are trying and do welcome feedback. I am a professor of management and they were grateful for the few suggestions I made.
The location is great. The room was big and according to the town. Breakfast was delicious, with a lot of selections for everyone. Internet worked perfectly. For the price I was expecting a bathtube, not just a shower.
Interesting, excellent standard of accommodation, great setting and area. 2 power cuts which we had to tell the hotel about rather than them telling us.
Excellent location.Lovely comfortable rooms.Very hospitable and friendly management and staff.Elegant hotel. Excellent value for money. Liked everything
Amongst the best hotels we have stayed at. Location to the old town was perfect. The quality of the hotel was excellent and is where Mel Gibson stayed at. The staff were so friends and helpful. The breakfast was a typical European breakfast, with limited selection. But all the positives more than make up for it.
Beautiful room, spacious, tastfully designed (mix of antique & modern design), excellent bed, top location and still very quiet
very good position to visit the city, very quite, large room, kindnessof the staff
The settting is wonderful, and the design of the hotelis fabulous. Italian design at its best in a palazzo,in the middle of the old town, close to everything. Personnel a little too stand-offish. Couldn't tellus how to get out of town...
the location is very nice, near to the attractions of the city of Matera, quiet area, except maybe the fact that the hotel is neighbouring a church and there might be some bell noises
Staff extremely friendly and helpful. Fantastic location above one of the squares. The room was a lovely size and well equiped. Decor was contemporary which we like. Idealic small hotel with only 7 rooms - perfect for weekend stay and very quiet. Lovely large bed although could have benefited from a duvet rather than sheets and blanket as the temperature had dropped. Breakfast was poor. Not enough choice. Shower was not particularly clean and the room was dusty high up over the wardrobe; light fittings and bed. More pillows would have helped for a better nights sleep.
central position bathroom is poorly laid out and breakfast was adequate but not more
good location the hotel staff is not Italian
The room was spacious We asked for non smoking - however room was used by smokers. When told staff - they said nothing could be done. As we were there only one night I did not persue the matter further
Staff on reception extremely helpful. Location very good - parking no problem and a pleasant stroll then into Matera centre. We were staying during August when the hotel seemed virtually shut down. We did manage to get a drink from the bar one evening, but they clearly were not anticipating customers. The dining room at breakfast was rather depressing - so quiet and empty.
First of all hotel's staff very kind, at any occasion ready to be on guests service. Approach to hotel is a bit complicate by car. Expected a little more from buffet breakfast.
Parking facility with a hotel relatively close to the city centre facilities. Very comfortable and welcoming. In hotel during peak weeks in August and some facilities, such as the evening restaurant, "not available for the Ferragosto period"
Internet didn't work well
Great attention to detail. Excellent breakfast. Easy to find and convenient to centro storico.
quiet and clean; good location related to price for a 4 stars hotel.good place to visit "i sassi" but you must have a car cold
the rooms are well eqiped, clean and maintained. the staff is friendly and willind to help. it is not a walking distance from the center.
Staff pleasant and helpful, location good Air conditioning does not work well and is ineffective (important factor when it was 37 deg. C.). Room furnishings a bit tired and dated
The staff gave us good and friendly services. When we arrived at the hotel, the restaurant in the hotel had already closed. However, the staff gave us the information about a good restaurant in the town instead. And we were satisfied with the restaurant he recommended. The room was wide with comfortable accommodation. Since there are many signs of the hotel in the town, it was easy for us to look for the hotel. If visitors are using their car, the hotel is of choice. The breakfast at the restaurant in the hotel was good. One of difficulty we felt was that the waiter looked busy. And it was too late to ask us orders for drinks (cappuccino) as well as to come to our table. If possible, it will be better to add one more staff for help.
Room Breakfest was quite poor - only paistry, no eggs or meet offered
Hotel is centrally located and has a great overall ambiance. The modern decor juxtaposed with the ancient setting really works and it is very charming Services and staff are not at 5 star level and not ready for "the big time." 98% of the hotel is amazing but the other 2% are vexing and frustrating. There is no porter service of any value --we had to lug our own bags to our room-- the hot water was scalding hot and could not be changed, and there were no Kleenex in the bathroom. Directions to dinner were flat out wrong, and the service in general was distant and cold. The "attitude" type hotel should be met with flawless service and standards. In this case it was just odd and out of place.
Very kind hotel staff and a nice room for breakfast. Very good location but a bit difficult to find a way (access) to the hotel by car.
very clean rooms, most delicious design, beautiful location no free swimming-pool
Staff and unique ambiance It was really hard to find our room, and our key did not always work. Also, they had trouble making up the room within the six hours we gave them.
Very special room, in the rocks. Very modern and new. Fantastic position, right at the edge of the old city wall, facing the "canyon".Nice breakfast. Not easy to find. Best is to call the hotel and someone will lead you to the hotel.
Amazing staff, huge rooms and lovely view make for a perfect hotel!
Our stay at the Basiliani was wonderful. It was very clean and comfortable. The room was large, the bath was nice, the breakfast excellent and the service awesome. Matera is an extremely interesting place to visit. We highly recommend the area and this hotel
Best location ever - perfect desgign & very helpful staff. n/a
Really friendly helpful staff. Fantastic location right in centre of the Matera Sassi.
An incredible and romantic experience that is unique and not reproducible elsewhere. Francesco and the staff were very helpful and made our stay memorable. This is a green hotel...they are preserving a bit of world culture and heritage. Don't pass this up for a stay.
Everything was perfect!
Everything was new, nice, clean and comfortable. The staff was very helpful. They gave us a good map and useful itinerary tips for visiting the amazing "Sassi". They even recommended us an excellent restaurant there. The hotel is on the main road coming from Bari and if you don't know the town is the best place to just stop, drop your car off in their covered parking and enjoy walking in the town. It's only 10min walk on the same road to the historic centre.
Best hotel in my entire trip for two weeks. Staff are very friendly. It could be a little bit pricey, but the dinner is comparatively inexpensive for hotel like this
good price, nice breakfast, quiet, available parking area, friendly staff
Everything was excellent :D
I liked the location, in the heart of the sassi and the staff was extremely helpful. I also had a wonderful experience, thanks in part to the hotel. They ordered a taxi to take me to the bus stop in Villa Longhi for the bus to Naples. cosimo torraco, the driver, didn't want to leave me alone at the bus stop which was deserted and waited an entire half hour with me to be sure I wasn't stranded in a suburb with no phone or help. Then he refused a tip! (He didn't speak English and I don't speak Italian.) His concern was very touching. I thought the bed was unnecessarily narrow and high. There was room for a larger single bed and this was the one thing that could be improved. The bed was like a hospital bed and I felt I might fall off it. That was my only complaint about this wonderful stay.
The location is perfect to explore Matera. Staff is very helpful. The room is unusual because it is partly hewn from a rock Parking facility. Inform yourself well on how to reach the hotel. You cannot reach the hotel by car. The shower curtain was way tooo small. Aircon was not good enough for the hot summer day
Hotel Sassi was in the center of the historic part of town, gorgeous views. The rooms were spacious and clean. The staff was kind. The breakfast buffet was beautiful and plentiful. It was a wonderful stay. We have 4 kids, 8, 6, 5, and 4 - it was a fun experience for them to stay in a 'cave'. Zero.
Excellent position though more details on access by car would be helpful
Fantastic position. No vehicle access, pretty basic facilities.
Fantastic location with amazing views. Helpful staff, fascinating building and a real sense of being part of something historical.
Excelent. Value for money. We had the most wonderful room. The staff is very qualified and helpful. The hotel is just perfect! Hard to find even using a GPS. At least we had to phone the hotel and appointed a place where they could find us and bring us to this wonderful hotel.
beautiful views and position. Really bad breakfast - cold and took minimum 25 minutes to get a coffee as the girl had to run a down 2 huge flights of stairs to get it (poor thing). The 'signora' at front desk burst into my room without knocking when I was in bed and was really unpleasant about it. She also would not believe me when I said my TV was not working. She said 'How come the TV's work in every room but not yours?'
Luxurious, and great location. Wonderful, would love to stay here again.
hotel staff was excellent and very accommodating. the hotel itself is very luxurious and unique. Very comfortable stay.
Breathtaking location. Excellent hospitality
very unique location in the Sassi. Special and design. on the website we saw spacious rooms, but once there we got a very tiny one on 2 floors with extremely narrow stairs to go upstairs. If known in advance we would not have stayed there.
The turning of the sassi into a hotel had integrity and restraint -it is in the middle of a stunning, ancient landscape and it felt right. Fantastic breakfast, lovely owner, beautiful rooms; in four weeks traveling round Puglia, Bascilicata and Calabria both Matera and L'HotelinPietra were the highlight for me.
The owner, Roberto, went out of his way to be accommodating. He obviously takes a lot of pride in his hotel, which just opened in January. The hotel itself is beautiful, with great care taken to both preserve and utilize the uniqueness of the site in the design. There was nothing I did not like.
Quiet; room comfortable in its simplicity. Excellent orthopedic bed mattress!
Absolutely gorgeous and uber chic rooms, superb friendly staff (Roberto and Gianni) who gave point on dinner recommendations and even gave us a free bottle of local wine before we left, awesome music being played in your room (u can turn it off anytime). It was just an amazing experience overall and one of the nicest hotels we've stayed in. Location was great for exploring the Sassi. We weren't told this, but we also saw free parking available down Via Fiorentini just 5 min walk from the hotel. Just 2 things we thought would make this amazing hotel even more perfect (1) We like to go barefoot in our rooms, so perhaps if they provided bedroom slippers cos the natural stone flooring was a bit rough and left a chalky deposit on your soles. (2) Not sure if it's too much to expect complimentary bottled water as well? Cos our previous hotel had that, though just a minor point cos u could easily purchase that yrself
Very charming atmosphere, magnificent view, a very special structure quite unique in terms of architecture Not so easy to reach, specially if you have heavy luggage
Wonderful experience in a unique setting. Excellent staff. Relaxing environment.
